On October 29th, 2017, your Clark Chargers basketball team faced off against Bishop Gorman. After suffering a bitter defeat of 58-62 against the Gaels during last season’s state finals in February, the Chargers were eager to set the tone for the season with a victory.

The Chargers started off strong, with solid offensive plays and defensive counters. At the half, the Chargers were in the lead with close a score of 18-17. Shots were simply not falling for either team, as both played solid defense, which led to players having to jump from end to end as each team had their chances at making their own buckets, respectively.

During the second half, however, the tempo and field goal percentages began to pick up. Ultimately, the game came down to the wire.

Tied at 48-48, Clark Coach Beeten took a timeout and strategized how to execute their final play before the timer ran out. With just over a second left in the game, junior small forward Jalen Hill spun out his defender in the paint, caught the inbound pass, and finished with a tough bucket in for a game-winning buzzer-beater. Final score: Clark 50, Gorman 48.

“It was an awesome play,” says senior Trey Woodbury. “It’s relieving, but we can’t get too overconfident. We’ve still got to beat them three more times, and they’re only going to get better.”

It was a strong win for the Chargers, and will hopefully set the tone for the upcoming season. Revenge is sweet, and this rematch saw Clark come out on top. And who knows – we may just have had a preview of the state championship match to come.
